If you have the new MacBook Pro and would like to take a screenshot of a selected area of a screen and save it to the clipboard, it's a little different to the earlier models.

The command is

cmd+ctrl+shift+4

I find this a little awkward so I customised this in the systems preferences like so (see below picture):
